Description: This special pre-conference Workshop will offer participants a unique opportunity to review some of the basic principles of general semantics, then apply those principles toward major issues of the day.
Using a facilitated workshop format, participants will select from among the most topical, and contentious, issues that have proved difficult to "make sense" of, such as:
- Abortion rights
- Gay rights
- Pre-emptive war
- School uniforms
- Separation of church and state
- Tensions between technology and religion
- Abstinence-only sex education
- Evolution
- Public vs. private education
- Corporate ethics
- Tax policies
- Global warming and climate change
- Water rights in the west
- Global/Local environmental issues
- Immigration policies
- etc.
The workshop is designed to provoke stimulating conversation in a lively, sociable environment. Participants will takeaway the benefits of a structured evaluation approach which can be applied to other debates and discussion. Those who attend the "Making Sense" conference following the workshop will be better prepared to critically assess and evaluate the presentations and discussions. Participants will receive copies of all materials used during the workshop sessions and will be encouraged to use them as they can in other groups and forums.
